XM Canada's The Verge Music Awards Presents $50,000 to Support Canadian Musicians

TORONTO, Sep. 25, 2008 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX News Network) --

<< The Weakerthans and Hey Rosetta! Take Home Artist of the Year and Album of the Year >>

XM Canada (TSX:XSR), the country's leading satellite radio company, has awarded $50,000 to two bands - Hey Rosetta! and The Weakerthans - as part of its continuing support and promotion of emerging Canadian musicians.

The Verge Music Awards, named for The Verge, channel 52 on XM satellite radio, which is dedicated to featuring Canada's cutting-edge indie scene, awarded Artist of the Year to The Weakerthans and Album of the Year to Hey Rosetta!'s "Into Your Lungs." Each band walked away with $25,000 last night at the inaugural awards ceremony in Toronto.

The Weakerthans, from Winnipeg, have released five albums since 1997 and received rave reviews from critics worldwide for their combination punk, rock and folk sound. "Into Your Lungs" by Hey Rosetta! is the band's second album. The six-piece band from St. John's formed in 2005 and has earned accolades for their live shows and distinctive music. More than 45,000 Canadians participated in The Verge Music Awards, voting online at XM Canada for two months to decide the winners in each category.

"The Verge channel is dedicated to providing a national and international platform for up-and-coming Canadian musicians and we are thrilled to provide last night's winners with cash prizes that will financially help them in future projects," said Janet Gillespie, Marketing Vice-President of XM Canada. "Canada has a lot to offer in the indie and alternative music scene and XM Canada is committed to continue supporting and promoting our home-grown talent in this genre as well as the entertainment scene in general."

The Verge Music Awards, as well as stellar performances by established Canadian stars Broken Social Scene, The Stills and Sebastien Grainger, were broadcast live-to-air across North America on XM Satellite Radio on The Verge, channel 52.
