| | It's No Joke: SiriusXM Canada Announces 45 Semi-Finalists in Its Third-Annual Canada's Next Top Comic Competition | | | Voting at www.canadasnexttopcomic.com opens today and ends October 31
TORONTO, Oct. 3, 2011 /CNW/ - They came, they made them laugh, but who will conquer? SiriusXM Canada (TSX: XSR), the country's leading audio entertainment company, today announced the 45 semi-finalists in its popular Canada's Next Top Comic contest. During the month of September, SiriusXM Canada criss-crossed the country, holding auditions in eight Canadian cities at Rumors Comedy Club, Lafflines Comedy Club and Yuk Yuks Comedy Clubs, to locate some of the country's top comedic talent. "We knew Canada had a lot of funny people working hard to hone their craft for their big break and they did not disappoint," said Jeff Leake, Programming Director, SiriusXM Canada. "This year we had over 700 people submit original material - 10 times more than last year - which confirms for us that so many talented Canadian comedians are working hard to jump to the next level in their careers. Throughout this whole experience, SiriusXM Canada has been committed to supporting comedy in Canada, ensuring it receives the support and opportunities it deserves." Starting today and until October 31, Canadians can visit www.canadasnexttopcomic.com to view and vote for their favourite semi-finalist. Canadians can also use the hashtag #TopComic to spread the word on Twitter and join the Canada's Next Top Comic conversation. "This is when the competition really starts to heat up and I'm really excited to see who gets through and what the comics are willing to do to get people to vote for them," said Matt O'Brien, last year's Canada's Next Top Comic winner. "It might seem weird promoting yourself but this round you really have to have confidence in your material and keep your eye on the prize." The 45 semi-finalists will be whittled down to 11 finalists - one from each audition night - as selected by the public and two wild card entries chosen by SiriusXM's panel of judges. Each finalist will receive a $1,000 travel grant from SiriusXM Canada to travel to Toronto and compete live at the Tuesday, November 15 Canada's Next Top Comic gala, hosted by Matt O'Brien, where the winner will be announced. SiriusXM Canada listeners will be able to catch the gala live on Laugh Attack 160. Vote for Your Favourite Semi-Finalist
